A Look at The Trump Presidency

A Look at The Trump Presidency

Themes that have defined President Trump’s Administration

The United States general election is set to take place on 3rd November 2020. Presently, Donald Trump is the 45th President of the United States. He was inaugurated in January 2017 to succeed Former President Obama. Initially, Donald Trump was renowned for his business acumen and entrepreneurial success in sports, entertainment, and real estate. He built on his private life when he joined politics and public service. Trump, a Republican, won in over 2,600 counties countrywide, which is the highest since President Reagan in 1984. Citizens supported his desire "To Make America Great Again" and eliminating the political status quo that had failed to deliver its promises. As an individual who won the Presidency in his first attempt at a political office, an analysis of the themes that defined his first term will be crucial.

Immigration

Throughout the presidential campaign, "making America Great" remained as Trump's key objective. In this declaration, immigration policies stood out since they contrasted with what the former presidents advocated for in the United States immigration policy. The initial U.S immigration policy focused on family unity, a safe place for refugees, and asylum. Based on Schmidt (2019), President Trump has challenged the United States tradition as a haven for immigrants and its traditional contribution to the International Community as a symbol of justice, liberty, and freedom. During his tenure, the world has witnessed the various acts of aggression and the harsh removal of immigrants. Further, the on-going debate over the funds to build the US-Mexico border resulted in a government shutdown from December 2018- January 2019, a move that affected the American immigration court system. The pending immigration court cases surpassed 900,000 as of mid-June in 2019.

The objective to enact changes was evident when the President exercised his power to Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. He issued an executive request to implement his vetting initiatives. This order, implemented immediately after his inauguration, was defined by key aspects that prohibited the non-immigrants and migrants from particular nations from coming to the United States for ninety days (Daugirdas & Mortenson, 2017). Additionally, he also suspended the United States Refugee Admissions program for 120 days. Trump's immigration policy focused on restricting legal immigration, building the US-Mexico border, reducing the number of refuge seekers, and stopping undocumented immigrants from accessing benefits (Cox & Rodríguez, 2020). The President also wants to deport immigrants who arrived in the country as children, limit visas and travel from specific, and re-evaluate the H-1B visa system. The immigration program has been the source of controversy during Trump's first term.

Domestic Affairs

In Trump's administration, healthcare has also been the source of disagreements and debates around the country. During the presidential campaign, he assured his supporters that his administration would reduce prescription drugs' cost and eliminate Obamacare. Although the President has not successfully revoked the Affordable Care Act, he has weakened it significantly during his first term. This is because President Trump's administration has taken the initiative to disrupt Obamacare by destabilizing private insurance markets. According to Margolis (2019), the President's health plan will seek to cut insurance premium costs and offer the citizens better healthcare. Presently, Trump's administration was working on better healthcare provisions for veteran hospitals.

The majority of Republicans voted for President Trump due to his resolve to deliver success via the reformed tax code and consistent regulatory surroundings. In this regard, in December 2012, he signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law. This Act affected the individual income tax by doubling the standard deduction, decreased income tax rates, and reforms to other benefits. Several tax regulations increased the tax burdens, affected economic progress, and burdened American businesses with unnecessary fines and complicated policies (Zerdin, 2017). Hence, most Americans have supported the tax cuts reforms that will eliminate the loopholes and deductions.

America First Foreign Policy

The "America First" policy was initiated by President Trump to emphasize the concept of isolationism. According to Guliyev (2020), America First is an international strategy that focuses on state interests above anything else. During his term, he has changed the course of the United States foreign policy on several issues. For instance, he withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific agreement and renegotiated the trade partnerships with Canada and Mexico (NAFTA) and South Korea (KORUS). The President has remodeled international impressions of the United States and created more challenges in formulating proper relationships. Recently, the failure to enforce Article 5 of the NATO agreement during an official trip to Europe created tensions with other member nations.

On the other hand, the 2018 and 2019 Trade Policy Agenda by the Trump administration was more aggressive than other governments. The policy focused on reinforcing trade interactions by supporting national security. This initiative's objective aligns with Section 232 on the impact of global imports of specific products on American national security. Additionally, he also renegotiated "outdated" trade partnerships in the United States. The present administration has affirmed that America will no longer accept unfair trade activities. The objective is to prioritize the application of national trade laws. Hence, Trump's administration has used its resources and powers to protect the country against the World Trade Organization.

In conclusion, President Trump is considered one of the most controversial presidents in the nation's history. The response to various factors that affect the nation's growth has been deemed unconstitutional and the cause of the dissolution of partnerships created by his predecessors. As the nation prepares for the upcoming general elections in November 2020, Trump's success will be based on his first term's approval and success rate.
