Nixon presidency

Early in the 1960’s there were a lot of demonstrations, rioting, antiwar protests, Cultural Revolution and civil unrest. This was brought about by the African American’s who were protesting against victories in the court concerning civil rights. These African Americas were led by Dr. Martin Luther king Jnr. These protests brought about a successful political change. In his early years into the presidency, racial tensions broke out in destructive riots in the Los Angles, Detroit among other cities. This forced President Nixon to try and balance the concerns of these black American’s though this was not what many whites desired. Shootings that occurred in Kent state university got an international attention and to some extent shook his administration.

Before Nixon joined the presidency, the American’s were already fighting the Vietnam War. The war started in 1964 though it was unprecedented since it had a lot of media coverage to a point is was called the first television war. When Nixon was re-elected as the president he promised “peace with honor” to end the Vietnam War. He did propose a doctrine called the Nixon doctrine which was to establish a strategy to turn over the fighting of the war to the Vietnamese and he termed this as Vietnamization. Hence he was able to bring the war to a closure.

Nixon was able to reorient the United States foreign policy from containment to détente which is still the policy between China and the United States in the 21st century but the Soviet Union later rejected the détente and decided to use American toleration which would mean an extension of their operations to the Latin America. Moreover, Nixon was able to persuade the Soviet Union and China to tolerate the American policy in Vietnam. This meant that they left their erstwhile ally north Vietnam standard hence aided the actualization of Vietnamization which was proposed by Nixon when he was reelected.

The Watergate scandal claims the president Nixon just before his reelection, he committed burglary of the democratic national committee and had covered it up so that his fame and popularity would not be affected. However, after his reelection, investigations began and no one could believe the findings. Revelation after revelation provided a very strong evidence that Nixon actually did plan for the burglary cover-up so that he would be reelected. This was what led to him resigning instead of waiting to be impeached by the house representatives. However his successor pardoned him for the crime.

Both the middle income and low income earners benefited greatly during his tenure. Their income rose greatly while the cost of borrowing had gone down this meant that the citizens were now being self-sufficient. The rate of unemployment also reduced during the period he was in presidency. The ideas proposed and implemented by Nixon though some we abolished immediately he resigned, it helped fight against government spending. It also led to cut the capital gains tax making the good economy better. Unemployment also was reduced by almost half meaning no one would be sleeping in the streets begging.
